Check out this recent report by the Consumer Federation of America, which found:

7.4% of American homeowners are uninsured, which adds up to 6.1 million unprotected homes worth $1.6 trillion.
Rural homeowners are more likely to be uninsured.
Homeowners earning under $50,000 are twice as likely as the general population to be uninsured.
