“Stewardship is one of our core values,” says agency President Dan Weaver. “Stewardship means we are entrusted with the care of our clients. We are fiduciaries to our clients’ insurance needs and take responsible management of our clients’ trust, placing their needs before ours.”

That philosophy shines through in the service Barker Weber delivers. Whether in personal lines, commercial lines, or benefits insurance, the agency is known for its personalized, hands-on approach to customer care.

“We pride ourselves on getting to know each and every one of our customers beyond their coverage needs,” Dan says. “We want to be the first person they call for everything that’s insurance- or finance-related, and we strive to either meet their needs ourselves or point them in the right direction to one of our partners who can.”

Trusted Advocates

In 1982, current agency CEO Bill Barker and business partner Carl Weber founded Barker Weber Insurance in Jackson, Michigan. Initially, the agency focused on life, health, and personal lines, adding commercial insurance in 1985.

In commercial lines, Barker Weber established itself early on as a church specialist but has expanded its focus over time. In recent years, the agency has found success in several areas of commercial lines, including manufacturing, contracting, and trucking, with growth in those areas driven by the service the agency delivers. The agency also maintains strong retention in personal and commercial lines, an achievement Dan attributes to a dedicated team of attentive staff.

“I’m proud to say we are a company our competitors hate to see come across on a dec page—it takes the wind out of their sails because of what we offer to clients,” he says. “We are known for being responsive. Our customers never wonder when they will hear back from us because our people aren’t resting until our clients’ needs are met. We always want to work with integrity, be ambitious, have stewardship, and be humbly confident in all that we do.”

Barker Weber is also known for its stewardship in and of the local community. “If there is a need, we strive to fill it,” Dan says. “I feel we’ve done a good job of making sure our impact is felt in the community.”

Maintaining Focus

As it looks to the future, Barker Weber plans to continue expanding in the mid-Michigan area while remaining locally owned and operated.

“We are seeing other agencies being bought up left and right, but that’s not our goal,” Dan says, adding that the agency will stay focused on the philosophy of stewardship that has driven its success.

“There is no ‘secret sauce’ to success in this business. It comes down to treating people with respect and putting the client as a priority.”
