Slick roads, smeared windshields, and unpredictable spring weather can make driving in the rain more stressful than serene. But with a little preparation and extra caution, you can stay safe and confident behind the wheel—even when it’s pouring.

Here are a few tips to help you drive safely when April showers rain on your parade.

Before You Hit the Road

Spring is the perfect time to give your car a seasonal checkup. Be sure to:

  • Test all exterior lights – headlights, taillights, turn signals, brake lights, backup lights, and parking lights.

  • Replace worn-out wiper blades to keep your view crystal clear.

  • Check your tires for proper tread and pressure—including your spare.

  • Make sure the defroster works to prevent foggy windows.

  • Stock up on rainy-day gear, like an umbrella and rain poncho, and keep them in your car.

  • Apply rain repellent to your windshield and mirrors to improve visibility.

While Driving in the Rain

Once you're on the road, keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Slow down and increase your following distance. Wet roads reduce traction and increase stopping time.

  • Turn on your headlights—not only does it improve visibility, but it may also be legally required when your wipers are on.

  • Avoid standing water and potholes whenever possible. What looks like a small puddle could be deeper than expected.

  • Watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and wildlife who might be harder to see in the rain.

  • Follow the tire tracks of the car ahead—they’ve already pushed some of the water aside, giving your tires a bit more grip.

  • Avoid cruise control in rainy conditions. You’ll want full control of the vehicle in case of hydroplaning.

  • Use built-in safety features like traction control, ABS, stability control, and lane-keeping assist if your vehicle has them.

  • Know the signs of hydroplaning. If your steering feels light or unresponsive, ease off the gas, steer straight, and don’t make sudden moves.

Think Spring, Think Safety

While April showers might challenge your driving skills, they also bring blooming flowers, colorful rainbows, and puddles worth jumping in (just not with your car!). Stay prepared, stay safe, and when it’s time to protect your ride, check out Acuity's auto insurance options.

Think spring. Think Acuity.
