Winter may blanket your home in snow, but it doesn't have to bury your curb appeal! By preparing your outdoor spaces and making simple updates, you can help ensure your home stays inviting, safe, and well-maintained all season long. From organizing your garage to creating a cozy front porch, these tips can help your home shine, no matter how cold it gets.

  1. Clear excess items from your yard and porch. While a fresh layer of powdery snow can make almost anything picturesque, you don’t want toys, lawn furniture, or debris to hang around all winter long.
  2. Organize your garage and storage shed. You may need to do some rearranging and organizing to get all your summer items from tip #1 to fit into the garage or shed over the winter months. While the weather is still cooperating, consider pulling the snow blower out of the corner and having it trade places with the lawnmower!
  3. Update exterior lighting. One thing you might notice more as the days get shorter is exterior lighting. Replace any burnt-out lightbulbs or even consider upgrading exterior light fixtures to give your home a fresh look. Low-voltage landscape lights are also an easy way to add curb appeal.
  4. Add seasonal touches to your front porch. Your front porch can radiate warmth even in the cold. Consider adding seasonal décor like wreaths, planters with winter greenery, or even a fresh coat of paint on your door. Simple touches like a doormat or cozy lighting can make a big impact.

  5. Keep snow and ice under control. Prompt snow removal not only keeps walkways safe but also ensures your home looks cared for. Snow-covered driveways or sidewalks that go untouched can give the impression that a property is unoccupied. Consistent clearing can also prevent damage to surfaces and improve accessibility.

  6. Maintain your landscaping for winter. Trim back any overgrown shrubs or trees near your home before snowstorms to reduce the risk of damage. Adding mulch around the base of plants can protect them from harsh temperatures, and removing dead foliage can keep your yard tidy even under snow.

  7. Be a good neighbor. Winter can be isolating for some, especially older neighbors or those with mobility challenges. Offer a helping hand by shoveling a path or clearing ice for someone nearby. These small acts of kindness can make a big difference during a tough season.
